Which is why we’re so proud to announce that local surgeon scientist and orthopaedic training registrar Dr Rajitha Gunaratne has been awarded his PhD for his work with AIRO. Raj’s thesis entitled ‘Laser Osteotomy And Optical Sensing For Advanced Robotic Joint Tissue Surgery’ was awarded the honour recently by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Curtin University.

“This is great news” said Director and AIRO Co-founder Professor Daniel Fick, “Raj’s doctoral thesis was part of a larger project with AIRO, to explore how a robot-assisted joint replacement surgical system could distinguish between different tissue types; for example, different types of bone from different types of soft tissue.”
