The Australian Institute of Robotic Orthopaedics (AIRO) is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded an Innovation Connections grant of $50,000 from the AusIndustry Entrepreneurs’ Programme. This funding will be instrumental in optimising the process for AIRO's proprietary High-speed Intelligent Laser Osteotomy (HAiLO™) system's directed energy osteotomy (DEO™) parameters.

Drawing upon the distinct knowledge in bone and regenerative biology from two renowned researchers at the University of Western Australia, Associate Professor Nathan Pavlos and Dr Jacob Kenny, this project will provide important pre-clinical validation as we progress towards human clinical trials and work to attain regulatory approval. By working closely with the AIRO team, they will be exposed to the cutting-edge of 3D laser bone shaping and work within an ISO13485 accredited quality management system. In turn, this will help grow WA's knowledge in these new areas and foster a skilled local medical technology workforce.

AIRO's Managing Director and CEO Associate Professor Brett Robertson believes that through the collaboration between industry and academia, remarkable outcomes can be attained. "We have a strong connection with UWA ranging from our internship program, and scholarships administered by CEEDWA, to employing new UWA graduates," he explains.

With these innovative connections in place plus the utilisation of UWA’s world class Clinical Training and Evaluation Centre (CTEC) for human cadaver studies, AIRO is certainly making great strides toward truly transformative technology and orthopaedic health outcomes.
